Danish euro in Scania

I overheard the Danish prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, speaking on DR P1 the other day. He is now positive about the introduction of the euro in Denmark. The current financial crisis has shown the benefits of being part of the euro zone clearly, he explaines.

What does that mean for Scania? Most probably it will mean an increase of the use of the new Danish currency i.e. euro inofficially on the eastern shores of Øresund. You can even now use euro officially in the municipality of Höganäs. In the article "Dags att tala klarspråk om euron" published in the Swedish paper DN, the CEO for "Företagarna (Federation of Private Enterprises), is arguing for a revival of the Swedish debate regarding the introduction of the euro in Sweden. Both in Denmark (2002) (Image 1) and in Sweden (2003) (Image 2) prototypes of the euro coins have been produced.

In a not so distant future the Danish regent on the coins will be officially back in Scania! Probably in the form of Margarete II.

The only negative with this is perhaps the regent herself. The Danish queen has indeed shown very little interest towards the east part of Øreund so far. In spite of Scania, Halland and Blekinge being old Danish heartlands.

In other Old-danish lands i.e. the population in the area of South Jutland, Schleswig-Holstein now in Germany, always get attention in her New Year's speech. The Danish queen has yet failed to even acknowledge the old- (nowadays Scanians) or new Danish (mainly commuters) population in Scania. The people in Schleswig-Holstein have at least some representation on the coins in Germany. It is undoubtedly a nice gesture from the German state (Image 3).

Perhaps the introduction of the Danish Euro with her face on the coins can make the queen somewhat more interested in Scania? She will nevertheless be more frequent in everyday life over here.

Øresundståg, den nya portalen

Skickat till Øresundståg 2008-01-07:

Hej Øresundståg,

Ni skriver på er hemsida www.oresundstag.se:

"Bakom Öresundståg står Blekingetrafiken, Hallandstrafiken, Länstrafiken Kronoberg, Kalmar Läns Trafik *, Skånetrafiken, Västtrafik och danska Trafikstyrelsen. [---]"

The murder at Haraldsted

The 7th of January 1131 Canute Lavard (Knut/Knud Lavard meaning ‘Lord’ i.e. ‘breadgiver’) was murdered in Haraldsted in Zealand by his cousin Magnus the Strong, the son of King Niels the Elder. The assassination of Canute led to many years of civil war culminating at the Battle at Fotevik 1134 where Magnus was slain and Niels fled.

After his death, his posthumous born son Valdemar I the Great gained the throne and managed to canonize his father in 1169. As a Danish prince and son of the beloved Eric I (Ejegod) and the nephew of Canute IV the Saint, Canute Lavard is the second and last saint to be proclaimed in Denmark. Canute Lavard is regarded to be the ancestor of the Valdemar kings and the first border prince and duke who was both a Danish- and a German vassal.

Shortly after Canute Lavard’s death Canute's Guilds (Knutsgillen) were created in Schleswig (Slesvig) and other parts of the Danish realm, as well as in Sweden and in Estonia. There is some discussion whether they merged with older Canute's Guilds to the memory of the first St. Canute in some instances. The insignia for the individual Canute's Guilds are indeed more destinctedly depicting a king. Furthermore, there are references to both a small and a large Canute's Guild in Lund.

St. Canute's day (Knutsdagen) was originally celebrated in memory of Canute's death, the 7th of January. In the 17th century this day was moved, in Sweden and Finland, to the 13th of January where the focus instead shifted to the first St. Canute, Canute Lavard's uncle Canute IV the Saint.
